The Indian Coffee Houses Project
CROWDFUNDING ALERT:
Being passionate about gastronomy, travel, and social justice, the Indian Coffee Houses never fail to captivate me. These are worker-run restaurants where you can indulge in delicious dishes, snacks, desserts, and beverages for a modest sum, all within a simple and popular setting. There are approximately 400 of these establishments across the entire subcontinent.
It’s worth knowing that these ICH’s were born out of a resistance movement and protest against the state of emergency declared by Indira Gandhi. In a world where states of emergency are becoming an all-too-convenient solution for numerous governments, shedding light on the initiative of the ICH’s and drawing inspiration from them is quite intriguing.
I intend to honour this cooperative, which has been operational for almost a century – precisely 83 years – by giving voice to those who keep it running day in and day out.
Over a three-year period and spanning the entire country, I will be organising simple writing workshops for both the ICH workers and customers. Two themes will be offered:
- – Likes and Dislikes: I like and I don’t like
- – I Remember
The workshops will be conducted in English, and I also wish to have translations in the various local languages. This will demonstrate the respect and love I hold for languages and their scripts, and will add to the visual elegance of the book I plan to publish afterwards.
Initially, certain texts and photos will be posted on this Zin Around the World blog, somewhat like a teaser. I also aim to get in touch with various local presses to enhance the project’s visibility as it progresses.

Ce sont des restaurants dirigés par les travailleurs où tu peux savourer de délicieux plats, en-cas, desserts et boissons pour une somme modique dans un cadre populaire. Il y en a environ 400 sur l’ensemble du subcontinent.
Il faut savoir que ces ICH sont nés d’un mouvement de résistance et de protestation contre l’état d’urgence déclaré par Indira Gandhi.
Dans un monde où l’état d’urgence devient la solution de facilité pour de trop nombreux gouvernements, il est intéressant de mettre en lumière l’initiative des ICH et de pouvoir s’en inspirer.
Je souhaite mettre à l’honneur cette coopérative qui fonctionne depuis près d’un siècle, 83 ans en réalité, en donnant la parole à ceux qui la font tourner au quotidien. Je n’écris pas “ceux et celles” car je n’y ai jamais vu de femmes travailler jusqu’à présent.
Je vais organiser, sur une période de trois ans et à travers le pays, des ateliers d’écriture très simples tant pour les travailleurs que pour les clients des ICH. Deux thèmes seront proposés:
- J’aime, je n’aime pas
- Je me souviens
Les ateliers seront menés en anglais et je souhaiterais aussi avoir les traductions dans les différentes langues locales. Cela témoignera du respect et de l’amour que j’éprouve pour les langues et leurs écritures et contribuera à la beauté graphique de l’ouvrage que je souhaite publier ensuite.
Dans un premier temps, certains textes et photos seront publiés sur ce blog de Zin around the world, un peu comme un teaser.
J’aimerais également contacter les différentes presses locales pour accroître la visibilité du projet au fur et à mesure de son évolution.
